How Much Does CrossFit Cost? An In-Depth Look at CrossFit Prices Across the USA

You’ve got the motivation, you’ve got the drive, and you’re ready to dive into the vibrant world of CrossFit. But “What’s this going to cost me?” I hear you ask. After pulling together data from more than 3000 CrossFit boxes across the country, we’ve found that you’ll need to budget $159.59 per month on average.

Of course costs can vary, and there’s more to the story than just the average price. Different locations, offerings, and other factors can affect how much you end up paying.

We’re going to dive deeper into the research and explore the findings to help you make the best decision for your CrossFit journey.

The Research

Our findings were obtained using a comprehensive dataset that included pricing information from a whopping 3030 CrossFit boxes across the USA!

This dataset was painstakingly compiled in-house through manual research and outreach.

We basically went to CrossFit’s website and listed every single CrossFit affiliate that existed in the USA (at the time of writing) – it turns out there are over 3000 of them!

We went to each box’s website to obtain pricing information, and if it wasn’t available, we contacted them via email.

It was a tedious process that lasted months which makes this data the first of its kind and goes above and beyond what any other resource on the interwebs has done.

Our data will give you the most accurate picture of how much CrossFit really costs and the various options that are available. This will allow you to make a more informed decision about whether CrossFit is for you or not.

So How Much Does CrossFit Cost Per Month?

The exact average cost of an Unlimited Membership per month to attend any CrossFit box in the USA is $159.59. This is close to the average price for many states like Texas ($160.07), Virginia ($159.39), and Alaska ($156.64).

We then graphed a histogram of the raw data to try to gain the further insight using statistics. The histogram is shown below.

Using statistical analysis, we found that the most common average CrossFit prices fall within the $120 to $200 per month bracket.

This was based off a standard deviation of around $40 – covering 68% of the states. This includes states like Nevada, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Virginia, Delaware, Arizona, and many others.

Prices between $80 to $240 per month range are less common and include states like New York, New Jersey, California, and Louisiana, West Virginia, Maine. Prices outside this range are rare, with the District of Columbia being an example of a higher price at $236.17, and Wyoming being an example of a lower price at $108.00.

Let’s dive in further and explore the numbers.

Our Analysis

  1. Costs of Living: The average cost of a gym membership often correlates with the cost of living in an area. High-cost areas such as the District of Columbia and New York, which are known for their high cost of living, also have the most expensive CrossFit memberships. On the other hand, lower-cost states like Wyoming, Iowa, and Utah have some of the least expensive memberships.
  2. Population Size and Density: Areas with larger populations or higher population density may have more gyms and potentially higher prices due to higher demand and higher competition. For example, densely populated and high-demand areas like California and New York have a larger number of gyms and higher prices. In contrast, less densely populated states like Wyoming and North Dakota have fewer gyms and lower prices.
  3. Competition: In states with a high number of gyms, such as California and Texas, the prices can be a result of market competition. When there are more gyms, each one might offer competitive pricing to attract more customers. However, this doesn’t always lead to lower prices, as high demand and high cost of operation can still result in higher prices.
  4. Income Levels: In regions with higher average income, such as the District of Columbia and New York, gym prices may also be higher as businesses can charge more due to customers’ ability to pay. In contrast, states with lower average income levels may have lower gym prices.
  5. Demographics and Lifestyle: The popularity of CrossFit might also depend on the lifestyle and demographic of the population in a state. States with a younger population or a population more inclined towards fitness activities might have more CrossFit gyms and potentially higher prices due to higher demand.
  6. Regional Differences: It’s interesting to observe that states in the Northeast and the West Coast, which are known for higher costs of living, tend to have higher CrossFit prices. In contrast, states in the Midwest and the South, where the cost of living is generally lower, tend to have lower prices.

Our Analysis

  • New York, particularly New York City, is home to 11 of the top 30 most expensive CrossFit boxes. This is not surprising given that NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The high cost of living, including rent and wages, significantly contributes to the high membership fees. Additionally, NYC’s dense population and the high demand for fitness facilities likely drive up the prices. The concentration of wealth in this city also means there’s a market for premium-priced fitness services.
  • Matching New York, California also hosts 11 of the top 30 most expensive CrossFit boxes. The boxes are spread across several cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Culver City, all known for their high cost of living. California’s culture, which places a high emphasis on health and fitness, combined with a higher average income, likely contributes to the willingness of consumers to pay premium prices for fitness services.
  • Other States: The remaining 8 boxes are spread across Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Each of these states has at least one major city with a high cost of living relative to the national average. For instance, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, are both known for their active, outdoorsy cultures, which could drive demand for CrossFit. Grand Prairie, Texas, while not as expensive as NYC or San Francisco, is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, one of the largest and fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S.

The geographical distribution of the top 30 most expensive CrossFit boxes in the USA is heavily skewed towards areas with high costs of living, dense populations, and a strong culture of fitness and wellness.

These factors combined create an environment where CrossFit boxes can charge higher prices for their services. It’s also worth noting that these areas are likely to have a higher concentration of CrossFit boxes, leading to competition which can also drive up prices.

Our Analysis

  • The 30 cheapest CrossFit boxes are spread across 20 states, with Texas having the most (3 boxes). This distribution is more dispersed compared to the most expensive boxes, which are concentrated in high-income states.
  • The states where these boxes are located generally have lower average income levels. For instance, the average household income in Mississippi, where one of the cheapest CrossFit box is located, is $65,156, which is significantly lower than the national average of $91,858. This could be a factor in the lower pricing of CrossFit boxes in these areas.
  • The cost of living in these states is generally lower than in states like New York or California. For example, the cost of living in North Dakota, where the cheapest box is located, is significantly lower than in New York. This lower cost of living could allow businesses to operate with lower overhead costs, which could be passed on to customers in the form of lower prices.
  • Many of the cities where these boxes are located have lower population densities. For example, Minot, North Dakota, again, where the cheapest box is located, has a population of around 48,000. There is a lower population density and lesser competition with only 11 boxes in the state alone, which would allow businesses to charge lower prices.
  • Many of the cheapest boxes are located in more rural or suburban areas, as opposed to the expensive boxes, which are primarily in urban areas. The cost of living and operating a business in rural areas is generally lower than in urban areas, which could contribute to the lower prices.

Maximizing Value in CrossFit: Navigating Affordable Membership Options

Our comprehensive analysis of CrossFit prices across the USA reveals a spectrum of cost-effective alternatives that cater to diverse budgets and lifestyles.

In this section, we delve into data-driven insights, unveiling hidden gems of affordability within the CrossFit community.

From punchcard systems to discounted monthly plans, and remote training opportunities, we explore a range of practical solutions.

These findings not only demystify the cost barrier but also open up avenues for enthusiasts to engage in CrossFit without straining their finances.

1. Class Punchcards as a Cost-Effective Alternative

The data shows that many CrossFit affiliates offer punchcard options (e.g., 10, 15, 20, 30 class punchcards).

These options are significantly cheaper than unlimited memberships and allow flexibility.

For example, the average cost for a 10 Class Punchcard across various gyms is approximately $165.45, whereas the average cost for a single unlimited membership is around $159.59 per month.

Punchcards could be a more affordable option for those attending fewer classes per month.

2. Discounted Monthly Memberships Without Contract

Some gyms offer discounted monthly memberships without a contract. These are lower than the standard single unlimited memberships and provide a middle ground between commitment and flexibility.

For instance, the average cost for “Discounted Monthly, No Contract” memberships is around $161.35, slightly higher than the single unlimited but offering the benefit of no long-term commitment.

3. Weekly Memberships for Short-Term Commitment

For those who are unsure about their long-term commitment or have fluctuating schedules, weekly memberships can be a suitable option. The average cost for a weekly unlimited membership is about $64.13, which can be a more manageable expense for short-term fitness goals or trial periods.
